CT Abdomen and Pelvis Prep Instructions

We have given you this recommended instruction sheet because you have an appointment for a CT scan of your abdomen and/or pelvis. Please make sure to read and follow the instructions carefully before your procedure. If you have any further questions, please speak to a member of your healthcare team who will be pleased to advise you.

The procedure involves a computerized tomography (CT) scanner taking images of your abdomen and/or pelvis. These images are cross-sectional (like slices) and are used to produce 2D and 3D images.

Recommended preparation: Buy a bottle of Miralax (OTC) or a Ready-to-use enema kit at any pharmacy prior to your procedure. (This is a non-prescription laxative and at home kit.)

Two (2) Days Before Exam

• Purchase recommended preparation supplies at a local pharmacy or drugstore.

• Do NOT take bulk-forming agents (Metamucil, Citrucel, Benefiber, etc.)

• Do NOT take aspirin or aspirin containing medication (such as Excedrin or Bufferin.)

• Do Continue to take prescription medications during this prep time.

• Drink as much clear fluid as possible (Water, coffee, tea, Kool-Aid, carbonated beverages, Gatorade, etc.)

• After lunch, DO NOT have any more solid food from this point on. (You may have clear fluids, strained soup, meat extract, non-dairy ice cream, and jelly.)

• If you purchased MiraLAX, follow instructions and drink over 2-3 hours.

  
  

  
  

  One (1) Day Before Exam

• Drink as much clear fluid as possible (if required, this can contain sugar.)

• Do NOT eat any solid foods (You may have clear fluids, strained soup, meat extract, non-dairy ice cream and jelly.)

• The night before exam, if a home enema kit is purchased, administer it following the product instructions.

  
  

  
  

  Day of Exam

• Do NOT eat any food

• Do Continue to drink clear fluids

• After the procedure, you will be able to eat and drink as normal.
